The Short Answer

Quick answer: The AI-generated profile label means the profile features a person made with AI, not a real human. Instagram renamed its old AI creator label to this on 31 August 2026. Creators add it themselves, and Instagram limits the reach of AI profiles that skip it. It can also flag some profiles on its own.

What I Checked

I read Instagram's own announcement, posted on its creators site on 31 August 2026. I checked how Social Media Today reported the change that day, too.

Then I looked through Reddit threads from September and October 2026. That's where people describe what the label does to real accounts, including some who say it showed up by mistake.

Where Instagram is clear, I quote it. Where it's vague, I say so.

What the Label Means

Instagram's wording is simple. The label exists "to make it more clear to people when a profile features an AI-generated person rather than a human."

So it's about the person on the profile, not about single posts. Think of a virtual influencer whose face and body are fully generated. That account should carry it.

Instagram explained why in its announcement: "people don't like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated."

It Replaced the AI Creator Label

This isn't a brand new idea. Instagram says the change "builds on the learnings of the AI creator label we began testing earlier this year." Social Media Today reported that the AI creator label first appeared in May.

Accounts that already used the old label didn't get the new one forced on them. Instagram says they'll "see the new name and have a chance to review the AI-generated profile label, confirm if it still fits, or remove it if it no longer applies."

Where You'll See It

Once an account turns it on, Instagram says the label "will then begin to appear on their profile and alongside their content."

There's one exception. A post that already has its own AI label, because it was made or edited with AI, keeps that label instead.

One Reddit user described it from the other side in October 2026. They said the tag appeared "onto my profile and all of my posts." So expect it in both places.

Who Has to Add It?

Accounts that feature an AI-generated person. That's the whole rule, and Instagram leaves the call to the creator first.

Using AI tools doesn't put you in that group. Instagram says, "Creators who simply use AI tools as part of their creative process don't need to add the label."

By that wording, a real person who uses a feature like Generate Background on a story doesn't need it. You're still the human in the picture.

How to Turn It On

Instagram's instruction is one line. Creators apply it "by editing their profile and toggling on AI-generated profile."

  1. 1Open your profile.
  2. 2Tap Edit profile.
  3. 3Find the AI-generated profile option and switch it on.

The announcement doesn't show the exact screen, so the wording in your app may differ a little. If you can't find it under Edit profile, your account may not have the option yet.

What Happens to AI Profiles That Skip It

Here Instagram is direct. "We will also limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person and do not add this label."

In practice, that means fewer recommendations. Instagram says unlabeled profiles it detects "will be notified and can check Account Status to see if they're no longer eligible to appear in recommendations."

The wording points at recommendations, the places where Instagram shows accounts to people who don't follow them. So an AI influencer that skips the label likely keeps reaching its followers. New people just see it less.

Instagram Flags Some Profiles Itself

Notice the words "profiles that we detect" in that quote. Instagram doesn't wait for every creator to be honest. It has some way of spotting AI people on its own.

Instagram doesn't say how that works. One Reddit user in October 2026 said stripping file details didn't help: "Even after stripping the metadata from the videos, they are still detected by AI when I post them."

That user said Account Status then made them turn the label on.

Does the Label Hurt Your Reach?

Instagram says no, if you add it yourself. "Creators who proactively add the AI-generated profile label will not see a change to their profile's reach."

Not everyone is convinced. In September 2026, a person who runs marketing for an AI art account posted that since 1 September, the account had "a roughly 80% decrease in non-follower reach and discovery."

That's one account, and reach drops have many causes. But it shows why some creators are nervous about the change.

What If It Was Added by Mistake?

Google's search suggestions show people asking how to remove the label. In October 2026, a Reddit user with a small private account wrote, "I am quite certain that I have not posted anything to do with AI, and I have found no way to remove it."

Instagram admits errors happen. "Our systems might not always be perfect, so creators can check Account Status to see if there are any limits to their reach and appeal restrictions they believe were made in error."

If the appeal works, the profile can appear in recommendations again.

How to Remove the Label

It depends on how the label got there.

  1. 1You added it, or carried over the old AI creator label. Go back to Edit profile and switch it off. Instagram says accounts with the old label can remove it if it no longer applies.
  2. 2Instagram flagged your profile. Open Account Status in your settings and look for the restriction. Then appeal it.

Don't switch it off if your profile really does feature an AI person. Instagram says those profiles risk losing reach.

People Are Noticing It in Their Feeds

For viewers, the label is new and a little jarring. In early September 2026, one Instagram user posted that they'd noticed "the new tag over some accounts: AI generated profile."

Another asked in r/questions, "What is an Ai-generated profile on insta?" They'd felt something was off about an account for a while.

That's the label doing its job. It confirms a hunch that used to take a lot of scrolling to settle.

AI Profiles Show Up in Scams Too

The label only helps when it's there. Scammers have every reason to leave it off.

In a September 2026 post on r/Scams, a user described a stranger who texted to say their boyfriend was cheating. The stranger said she had also sent a message on Instagram from a fake profile. When the user checked their message requests, they found "a clearly AI generated profile with AI pictures."

So don't read a missing label as proof that a person is real. Treat strangers who message you out of nowhere with the same care as before.

What the Label Doesn't Tell You

The label tells you one thing, that the person on the profile was made with AI. You still won't know who runs the account, or whether a company is behind it.

Replies could come from a human or a bot, and the label won't say which. It also says nothing about how Meta uses your own posts.

That last part is a separate question. Our post on whether Meta trains AI on your Instagram posts covers it.

Spotting AI Profiles Without a Label

Until detection gets better, your own eyes still matter. A few habits help.

  1. 1Look at the hands, teeth and jewelry in close ups. Small errors often show up there.
  2. 2Check whether the same face appears in very different places with no friends tagged.
  3. 3Read the comments on older posts. Real accounts usually have real conversations.
  4. 4Be wary of any profile that moves fast to money, links or private chats.

None of these is proof alone. Together, they tell you a lot.

What It Means for You

If you only scroll, the label is a free hint. When you see it, you know the person isn't real, whatever the photos suggest.

If you post as a real person, you likely don't need it, even if you edit with AI tools. Watch Account Status in case Instagram flags you by mistake.

If you run an AI character, add the label. Instagram says that keeps your reach where it is, and skipping it puts recommendations at risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does AI-generated profile mean on Instagram?

It means the profile features a person made with AI rather than a real human. Instagram introduced the label on 31 August 2026 as a new name for its earlier AI creator label.

How do I remove the AI-generated profile label?

If you added it yourself, switch it off in Edit profile when it no longer applies. If Instagram flagged your profile, open Account Status in your settings and appeal the decision.

Why does my profile say AI-generated when I don't use AI?

Instagram detects some AI profiles itself, and it admits its systems might not always be perfect. Check Account Status for a restriction and appeal it if you believe it was made in error.

Does the AI-generated profile label reduce reach?

Instagram says creators who add the label themselves won't see a change in reach. Profiles that feature an AI person without the label may lose recommendations to new viewers.

How can I tell if an Instagram account is AI without a label?

Look for odd hands, teeth or jewelry, the same face in very different places, and comments that never turn into real conversations. Our guide to spotting a fake Instagram account has more signs to check.
